You had to be born in the 50s if you...

...remember eating jam sandwiches and collecting bottle tops

The 1950s saw the coronation of the Queen (on a television set!), the Festival of Britain, the end of rationing, rock'n' roll and the arrival of us! When Mum stayed at home cleaning with only a mangle to help and we played outside all day.

Then came the swinging '60s and the first warm glow of central heating. We watched men go into space, marvelled as British music took the world by storm and England actually won the World Cup. What a great time to be young!

Here's a few of our favourite memories of happy days gone by.

We got washed in a tin bath filled with a bucket and the kettle…

On Sundays Dad or Grandpa would be out in the garden in his jacket and tie, digging up his prized home-grown vegetables for the Sunday roast.

Everyone knew everyone. And we didn’t need online shopping to have whatever we wanted brought to our doors.

Only the well-to-do had the luxury of a rotary dial telephone in the hall. Our idea of a smartphone was the phone box on the corner filled with thick paper directories.

Saturday meant one thing… going to the pictures! Booing, hissing and slurping on a Jubbly. Lovely.

The day came when outside loos and paraffin lamps were abandoned for high rises that, quite literally, felt like the height of luxury.

No longer did we listen with mother because we could watch TV! We went from Muffin the Mule and Andy Pandy to Rawhide and Bonanza.

We played outside with our mates from the day we could walk and not even an injury would get us home for longer than it took to hastily dress the wound.

At school, teachers were only ever ‘Sir’ and ‘Miss’ and we put our hand up if we wanted to say something. Always.

There was nothing as exciting as seeing the holiday camp flags up ahead and knowing you’d soon be in an endless paradise of fun, games, activities, entertainment and knobbly knees.

As we got older, freedom got even sweeter once the L plates were off and we were behind the wheel, heading off on adventures down freshly laid motorways.

And with a Dansette in the boot, we could take the party with us. Wasn’t it a great time to be young and free?
