There’s always some great TV on at Christmas but there was a time when every soap, drama and comedy pulled out all the stops and we loved it. Here’s our selection of some of our most memorable Christmas TV moments of the last few decades for you to sit back and enjoy. Be warned, there’s some strong language in a few of these clips, but we suspect you’ve heard worse! Happy Christmas viewing everyone.
1. First televised Queen’s Christmas message
The first ever televised Queen’s speech was broadcast live from Sandringham in 1957, exactly 25 years after the first radio Christmas message aired.
2. Morecambe and Wise’s Christmas star turns
Back in the 1970s, these two were Christmas TV royalty with famous stars lining up to be humiliated by the daft duo. Here’s the grand dame herself, Shirley Bassey, getting the M&W treatment.
3. Only Fools and Horses caped crusaders
Can you believe this was almost 25 years ago? Peckham’s finest, Del Boy and Rodney dressed as Batman and Robin. Need we say more?
4. The Royle Family’s Christmas spirit
These family Christmases were always a joy to watch, but the one where Dave and Denise play host is comedy gold.
5. The Snowman’s melting moment
Our hearts melted as we saw the touching friendship between a boy and a Snowman unfold and the theme tune sung by Aled Jones has stayed in our hearts ever since.
6. EastEnders’ Christmas cliffhanger
This has to be the ultimate Eastenders’ duff-duff moment. Back in 1986, over 30 million viewers tuned in on Christmas day to watch Dirty Den serve Angie with divorce papers. What a guy.
7. Wizzard sparkling on Tops of the Pops
Wizzard’s ‘Wish it could be Christmas everyday’ was beaten to the Christmas number 1 spot back in 1973, but it’s become a legendary festive favourite that still makes it into the top 50 every year.
8. French and Saunders alternative Christmas message
The queen of comedy, Dawn French delivers an alternative Christmas message from her alter ego and real Hollywood Royalty - HRH Catherine Zeta-Jones.
9. Wallace and Gromit’s festive mayhem
‘The Wrong Trousers’ is a proper all round family favourite with one of the best chase scenes ever.
10. Gavin and Stacey’s Christmas sing-along
What’s not to love about Smithy and Gav’s spontaneous cover of Band Aid’s 1984 mega-hit ‘Do they know it’s Christmas?’
11. Dr Who and the killer Christmas trees
For time lords, Christmas is all about regeneration. Back in 2005 we were gripped as the newly regenerated 10th doctor, David Tennant, defeated killer Christmas trees in his very first episode.
12. The Office’s eagerly awaited Christmas kiss
And finally, the whole nation held its breath as our most loved office workers Tim and Dawn, finally locked lips. Ahhh…
